It’s Mr. Rogers’s real neighborhood.
You probably watched Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood as a kid, but did you know he’s a Pittsburgh native? He was born in Latobe, Pa. and lived in the city for most of his life. He filmed his beloved television show at WQED studios in Oakland.
Bonus: It’s also Batman’s neighborhood. Actor Michael Keaton – Batman of the 1990s – is a Pittsburgh native, and The Dark Knight Rises with Christian Bale was filmed here in 2012.
It’s the most livable city for a reason. (Actually, for lots of reasons!)
The Economist Intelligence Unit's livability survey ranks Pittsburgh as the most livable location in the Continental U.S. Only Honolulu outranks us and – let’s be fair – it’s hard to beat that island sun.
Pittsburgh is the only U.S. city in the London issue of National Geographic Traveller’s cool cities to visit in 2019. Also in 2019, Pittsburgh was also deemed “Food City of the Year” by af&co. And once you graduate, we hope you’ll stick around. Lending Tree ranks Pittsburgh among the top three best cities in the U.S. for first-time homebuyers.
We have a T-Rex.
Really! The world’s first Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton is on display at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. The city is delightfully weird in other ways, too. There’s a road that defies gravity and Swissvale’s Trundle Manor has been featured on MTV.
Hollywood is Everywhere
Speaking of dinosaurs, Pittsburgh is proud to be the hometown of Jeff Goldblum, star of the Jurassic Park movies. Zachary Quinto, George Romero, August Wilson, and Christina Aguilera are also from the area.
We bet you’ve seen movies that were filmed – at least in part – in Pittsburgh, too. These include The Avengers (2012), The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012), The Fault in Our Stars (2014), Concussion (2015), and Fences (2016), to name a few.
W&J even got in on the action! Several scenes from the Netflix series Mindhunter were shot on W&J’s campus in 2017.
Emoticons, Mr. Yuk, and the Big Mac were invented here.
