on wednesday, 26 november, five year 9 students took part in the middle years ethics olympiad. in response to a topical provocation, students collaborated in critical thinking and rigorous discussion with competing schools – visible learning at its best! we congratulate these students on their capacity to think creatively and speak persuasively, particularly in an online environment. thanks is extended to marianne de luise, learning diversity coach and melanie mckenzie, learning support officer for providing this opportunity to our students. well done to the following year 9 students who represented siena college with great distinction: mia fenton, evie goodale, amali hawkins, angelina rodos, carly walsh.
we congratulate all yr 11 students who this week complete their year 11 academic year. this has included a final fortnight of year 11 exams and the commencement of their year 12 studies in the headstart program. i commend all students on their engagement in this final week. they are well placed to now enjoy a well earned rest in readiness for 2021. my thanks to staff who have supported all students at such a busy time of the year: continuing classes during a peak period of assessments, marking and feedback, many of whom have still been supporting year 12 students in exam preparations, given a later schedule this year. the commitment of both students and staff to ‘finishing well’ is very evident.

as we approach december we usher in a new liturgical year - advent is a special time that is often neglected in the pre-christmas crush.
one of the main advent themes is waiting - our vce students are waiting for their results and all of us are excitedly waiting for our holiday break to begin in a little while…
it might seem strange but advent also reminds us that god is waiting for each one of us to contribute to our world becoming a more just and peaceful place.
so, in waiting for the birth of jesus, we are waiting for god to actually come among us in the person of jesus – with his message of unity and harmony among all people. former master of the dominican order timothy radcliffe op reflects:
during advent, we are like people gathered around the bed; we await the birth. but god’s coming was not just the birth of a child; it was the coming of a word… though it needed thousands of years before there was a language in which god’s word could be spoken in the form of jesus.
thank you to the siena community for your support of learning and teaching over the last five years. it has been a wonderful privilege to work with your daughters and such a committed staff who always have the student’s learning at the centre of what they do. i have enjoyed my time here at siena and am proud of what we have been able to achieve together. in particular, i reflect on the challenges that we have faced together this year and how well we have risen and continually adapted to these challenges. thank you for your trust and support.
i have always embraced change and been open to new adventures and now look forward to the next journey of my professional and personal life as my husband and i embark on a ‘sea change’. thank you once again and i hope you are all able to have a safe and peaceful christmas.
the vcaa examinations will conclude on december 1. it has been a massive undertaking ensuring that we have run exams in a covid safe way. thank you to all those responsible and the care that you have shown for each student during this period. i wish our year 12 students all the best in their future endeavours.
year 12 results will be published on december 30 and the college will be open on this day to support or assist any year 12 student with their change of preferences or any other careers support. students should contact ms timmins to make an appointment on this day.
year 11 students have completed their examinations and are able to collect the marked papers on friday, november 27. year 12 head start has also run this week and it has been great to see the enthusiasm and serious approach the girls are already adopting to year 12. thank you to the teachers who have been running year 12 head start classes.
year 10 students have finalised all assessment and will commence a four day year 11 head start program next week. year 10 students will finish on thursday at lunch time.
year 7 to 9 students have also finalised their siena assessment. however, as a result of the cancellation of naplan, we have decided to engage an independent consulting firm to conduct a series of diagnostic tests for all year 7, 8 and 9 students. these are the same tests that we usually conduct with our year 6 and year 10 students.
year 8 students will sit the tests on tuesday, 1 december and year 7 and 9 students will sit the tests on wednesday, 2 december.

parents will be able to access their daughter’s report on december 10. however, all year 7 to 10 semester two results will be published on monday november 30. year 11 semester two results will be published on friday 27 november.
a year of change has precipitated a change in name to this auspicious event. we warmly invite you to attend the awards night of excellence, via webinar, on wednesday, 9 december at 7.00pm. invitations and a link to the webinar has been emailed on monday, 23 november. those students receiving an award, and their parents, will be emailed a personal invitation on monday, 30 november.
it is hard to believe that we find ourselves in the final days of the 2020 school year. we have spent much of it working and learning from home and connecting with our family and friends remotely. many of us have also had time to consider what is most important in our lives and have really counted our blessings as we watched, and are still watching, other parts of the world struggle to bring the pandemic under control. many times, i have felt very grateful to be living in australia and i am sure that many of you have felt the same way.
on a more local level, our students have also experienced so many mixed emotions this year and i think that i will always remember their excitement about being back at school in october. they counted their blessings that they were able to continue their learning, to engage in lunchtime activities, music and sport and to nurture their wellbeing.
we bid farewell this term to maree cody, head of student wellbeing for kurrajong house and jill foley, head of student wellbeing for waratah house. it is impossible to count the number of students they have supported and parents they have worked with over the years, but i know that they have made a positive impact on all in their house. maree and jill have led with joy and passion and we wish them every happiness as they embark on new adventures.
may this holiday period be filled with the true joy of christmas and may we continue to count our blessings.

during the year, our year 9 students have faced their challenges with grace and resourcefulness, producing some outstanding work, as they recycled unused denim clothing items into useable contemporary works of fashion.
students were asked to use an existing garment – denim jeans, jacket, skirt or shirt, and apply hand-made design motifs as embellishments. these motifs were based on japanese design and imagery, utilising three dimensional texture or applied two dimensional fabric, along with incorporating hand sewn embroidery where appropriate.

this week’s wellness session for students in years 7, 8 and 9 focused on the st mary’s house of welcome story and the role that siena has played and continues to play in this story. students reflected on the ways in which their donations of food and toiletries can work to preserve the dignity of fellow melburnians and represent kindness and compassion to those who are experiencing hardship, especially throughout the christmas season. our students were invited to write a personalised message to accompany their donations. despite many of our siena families facing hardships of their own throughout the course of 2020, the generosity and thoughtfulness of our families and the way in which you have responded to our request for donations has once again reflected the siena spirit. for this, i am truly thankful.
the final siena career news for 2020 lists important dates for year 12 students along with information on a change of preference expo in december when results are released. year 12s have been sent information from all tertiary institutions on the dates and times of their change of preference activities and i will be available at school on 30 december for year 12s and their parents to book appointments if required.
year 12s are encouraged to consider a tafe course on their preference list especially with many of the popular courses now being part of the free tafe program. there are links to the list of free tafe courses in this week’s siena career news. the diploma of nursing, advanced diploma of accounting and the diploma of justice, just to name a few.

if you are interested in a career in fashion, there are many ways to enter the field depending on if you want to design or market fashion to the public. in this last edition for the year, a variety of fashion courses at tafe and university are also featured.

our annual parish appeal starts this week. it will allow the st dominic’s community to continue to make a difference to the lives of these vulnerable people in so many ways. we provide friendship and social inclusivity and with your generosity we can also provide invaluable financial support for dignified accommodation and assistance with the costs of living for the interim time until they can provide for them selves
as a passionate group of volunteers, we feel committed to working on your behalf and every dollar donated is used to support of these people seeking asylum and refugees.

a newly created tile in the siena central student page has been added to address the large number of lost property items. the tile contains photographs of any items that have been handed in at student reception that are not named. any lost property that is left over at the end of each term will either be given to the second hand uniform shop or given to charity. could you please encourage your daughters to access the lost property tile when they have lost any items. siena staff hand all lost property directly to student reception.
it would be greatly appreciated if your daughter's belongings are clearly labelled, especially ipads, laptops and mobile telephones.
